It turns out, after a HUGE debate, that face masks are one of the most effective ways (outside of staying at home altogether of course) to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

Contrary to early reports that face masks were “useless” for personal protection from viral spread, it turns out that masks work for defending yourself and protecting others.  That is, face masks help defend wearers by some amount contracting the virus, but more importantly, they also prevent wearers who may unknowingly be sick with COVID-19 from infecting others and especially vulnerable people.

We know that convincing your child to wear a face mask isn’t always the easiest of things to do, However giving children a reason behind why we are all wearing masks beyond just telling them "we have too", "just put it on" or “its science” makes it real for them and helps justify the irritation wearing a face mask can cause giving them a sense of responsibility to help others around them.

As children are required to wear face coverings, it can be challenging to find something they not only like, but something they find comfortable enough to wear all day. So here at Jayley we have made sure all our masks are soft to touch, breathable and have a variety of much more wearable styles for your child to pick from especially if you are talking about wearing them for long periods of time on your daily adventures at the zoo, the park or on even on a plane to your holiday destination.

1. Fabric:

Research has found that the best-performing masks were made from cotton, offering protection comparable to surgical masks. Which fits in line with Jayleys 100% sustainable cotton face masks

Many people have been looking at adding filters to their face masks. It is extremely useful for someone who wants an additional layer of protection.

All filters available on Jayley’s website are to a medical standard of PM 2.5 meaning these filters give you the best protection. Specifically, if you’re going out in public, it’s a great way to give yourself extra protection, especially if you know you’ll be in a situation where you won’t be able to social distance.

2. The Fit:

The fit of any mask is crucial to its effectiveness. In fact, you can have the best-performing mask on the market — it won’t matter if it doesn’t fit your face properly.

Your face mask should go from near the bridge of your nose to down under your chin, and it should stretch at least halfway towards your ears.

The recommended advice is that masks fit snuggly but comfortably against the side of the face; be secured with ear loops or ties; include multiple layers of fabric without restricting breathing; be washable without any damage.  If a mask doesn’t fit tightly enough, particles will be able to come in through the sides. What’s more, if it’s got a loose fit, a mask will be more likely to slide around on your face, causing you to touch it and your face more frequently, which would ultimately defeat the purpose of wearing one in the first place.

3. Clean and Care:

The good thing about cloth masks is that you can reuse them. Though surgical masks degrade with each wash, fabric masks can and should be washed regularly. You can do so either in the washing machine or by hand washing using washing capsules.

Reports state that you can use the dryer or let a mask air dry, and “you can also go over it with a hot iron for a full assault on any germs that might remain on your face masks.”

Since you will need to clean your mask regularly, it’s probably a good idea to get a few masks for each member of the family.

How to explain to your little ones how to put on their face masks:

Most importantly make sure it is a fun experience, try even make it into a song or a dance to make it more enjoyable to remove any negative connotations of putting the mask on.

  1. Make sure hands are washed before putting on the mask.

  1. Check to make sure the face mask is the right way round (usually the coloured or printed) side facing out and the bendable metal edge is at the top by their nose.

  1. Place the covering over their nose and mouth or make sure they are placing it correctly.

  1. Secure the mask behind the ears and fit around the nose bone to make sure the sides and top fit snugly.

  1. Take a deep breath!  Make sure they can breathe easily!

How to remove your reusable face mask safely:

  1. Make sure hands are washed before taking off the mask.

  1. Remind your little one not to touch the inside of the mask (the part over nose and mouth).

  1. Remove the ear loops

  1. Handle by the ties or loops only.

  1. Fold corners together.

  1. Place it in the washing machine.

  1. Reminding them to be careful not to touch eyes, nose and mouth before washing hands.

Remember...and this is a hard one...don't touch your face! One of the good things about wearing a mask is it is a reminder to keep your hands away.
