How to wash and care for your faux fur

Wearing your favourite faux fur coat week-in-week-out can put strain on such a luxurious fabric – but fear not, we’ve prepared this handy guide to help you keep your faux fur in tip top condition.

Shake it off

Before you go ahead and try to wash your faux fur, give the item a good shake to dislodge any unwanted dirt and debris.

Brush it out

The fibres that make up faux fur can become matted and tangled. These knots can easily be brushed out with a firm brush – just give it some TLC.

Keep it dry

Like us, faux fur hates the rain! Try to avoid heavy downpours when wearing faux fur (easier said than done if you live in the UK) and carry an umbrella to keep that fur nice and dry.

Let it dry naturally

If you are caught outside in the rain and your faux fur does get wet, don’t be tempted to throw it in the clothes dryer. This is a big no-no for faux fur and can turn your beautiful Jayley garments into a matted mess. Let it dry naturally over time – this can be done by laying the faux fur piece flat in a warm room (but out of direct sunlight). Some coats and larger pieces may take up to 48 hours to air dry.

Hand wash only

If your faux fur isn’t looking or feeling as soft and premium as the day you bought it, it might be worth hand washing it to inject new life. Fill a plastic container (big enough to hold the garment) with tepid water and add a small amount of mild washing detergent. Submerge the item and swill around (avoid excessive movement) for about 10 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with clean cold water and leave to air dry (as above).

Leave it to the pros

When it comes to caring for premium fabrics like faux fur, the best solution is to take it to a professional. Most dry cleaners will be more than happy to reinvigorate your favourite faux fur pieces so that they are as good as new.
