How to wash and care for your Fur

If you’ve invested your hard-earned money into a luxury fur garment, the last thing you want to do is mistreat it and leave it to deteriorate. Here are some easy tips to follow to keep your fur pristine and looking vibrant for years to come.

Let it breathe

Don’t store your fur in an airtight garment bag. Fur needs air circulation to breathe, otherwise the natural hide will dry and crack, ruining the item.

Don’t crush the fur

Too much constant pressure on fur can crush the fibres, eventually leaving bald spots and patches. Avoid wearing bag straps over one shoulder, or sitting in your fur coat, for long periods of time as this can crush the fabric.

Avoid sprays and makeup

Don’t use hairspray or deodorant when wearing fur. The chemicals used in aerosols can damage and dry out the hide. Oils found in sprays and makeup can penetrate fur leaving unwanted smells. A quick fix to avoid getting makeup on your fur is to wear a scarf, this will stop makeup rubbing off your face onto the fur.

Keep it dry

It’s not always possible to avoid downpours, but when wearing fur, it’s a must. Fur hates getting wet! Carry an umbrella when you can to avoid getting your fur too damp. If it does get damp, shake out the fur to remove the excess water and hang it out to dry (out of direct sunlight) in a well-ventilated room.

Hand it to the professionals

It’s a good idea to get your fur coat or jacket professionally cleaned at least once a year to keep it looking and smelling fresh. A quick search online should flag up any local specialists you can take your fur to. If looked after correctly, fur can last for well over 50 years, so it’s worth investing in an annual professional clean.
