How to wash cashmere jumpers

With the right care, your Jayley cashmere jumper will remain a beautiful staple in your wardrobe for years. While the "dry clean only" label is a common misconception, washing cashmere at home is actually a simple process that can even make it softer over time.

• Hand washing is best: The safest way to wash your cashmere jumper is by hand. Fill a clean sink or basin with cool water (no more than 30°C) and add a small amount of a gentle, specialist detergent for cashmere or wool.

• Gently wash: Turn your jumper inside out and submerge it in the water. Gently squeeze the suds through the fabric. Avoid any harsh rubbing, stretching, or wringing as this can damage the delicate fibres. Let it soak for around 10-15 minutes.

• Rinse thoroughly: Drain the soapy water and rinse your jumper in clean, cool water until all the suds are gone.

• Remove excess water: Gently squeeze out as much water as you can without wringing. Lay the jumper flat on a clean, dry towel. Roll the towel up with the jumper inside, pressing gently to absorb as much water as possible.

• Dry flat: Unroll the towel and reshape the jumper to its natural size and shape. Lay it flat on a fresh, dry towel or a mesh drying rack away from direct sunlight or heat. Never hang a wet cashmere jumper, as the weight of the water will cause it to stretch out of shape.

• De-pilling: It is natural for cashmere to form small balls of fibre (pills) in areas of friction. You can easily remove these with a cashmere comb or a fabric shaver, which will keep your jumper looking its best.
