The effect Christmas films have on our mood

You may not be surprised when you find out that watching Christmas films can improve your mood. According to experts, it doesn’t matter which Christmas film is your favourite; it can instantly boost your happiness levels and help ease anxiety and stress.

This is because the hormones dopamine and oxytocin are released when you watch and connect with festive films. Whether that’s when you’re watching Kevin be reunited with his mother or when the Grinch goes to celebrate Christmas with Whoville, it leaves us feeling happy.

Dopamine is a type of neurotransmitter sending messages between nerve cells. It plays an important role in how we feel pleasure, and anything that triggers a dopamine release can be referred to as a dopamine rush.  Oxytocin is a hormone released into the bloodstream by the pituitary glands. It is classed as the love hormone and lets us have deeper, more meaningful connections with loved ones. It is said that by increasing dopamine and oxytocin levels will make you live longer and healthier.

Christmas films can also help relieve symptoms of depression by providing an escape from the daily stresses of life and an increase in perspective thinking.  This gives you a new point of view and understanding of another situation or person, which is critical to human development.

Overall, the positive emotions we feel when watching Christmas films, such as joy, hope, happiness and gratefulness, give us both personal and social reflections. These reflections can inspire new life goals, no matter how big or small. Christmas films give us the experience of living vicariously through the characters, lifting our moods and making us want to connect with the people around us. So now is your opportunity to choose your favourite film from our most-watched list below, snuggle up on the sofa and reconnect with your family and friends.

Expert Commentary

We asked for expert commentary, and Valerie Clark, a trauma and menopause coach, gave us a little insight into why we feel the way we do when watching Christmas films.

“When we watch Christmas movies or Christmas ads, it brings a warm sense of belonging. After all, we all want to be loved and surrounded by family and friends at Christmas.

It makes us want to be social, have parties, serve up warm hearty food and drink bubbles, be together with family and friends and belong. It gives us the feel-good factor.

When we watch these movies, we are using the limbic system in our brain; this is where we do our emotional thinking. You see, our brains are hardwired to keep us safe and alive, it works 24hrs a day, but it also has compartments that store memory. This is in the hippocampus, which gets triggered when we watch Christmas Movies. We remember the good times, and Christmas movies remind us of our childhood and times in our lives that were simple, uncomplicated, joyous, and happy.

As humans, we have a cognitive ‘nostalgia’ bias that makes us think things were better in our childhood or younger years. Some people live in the past and believe life was better years ago.

Christmas films are part of the Christmas festivities; they remind you of the good times spent growing up with friends and family, making you feel warm and fuzzy inside and lifting your spirits.

Christmas movies bring you into a fictional world where we can work through our thoughts about self-worth and what relationships mean. They can provide a place of safety when watching them, solace, reaffirmation and sometimes even courage to continue working through our own difficult situations.”
